Meditation Tree

by After You

An interactive meditation tree that visualises the user's heartbeat through rhythmic flower motion, accompanied by ambient light and sound to evoke stillness.

Meditation Tree: A Visual Interactive Device for Future Mood In a future shaped by information overload and rising digital stress, the ability to regulate emotions and maintain inner balance is becoming essential. The Meditation Tree is an interactive device that addresses this need by combining meditation practices with data physicalisation. It senses users’ physiological and behavioural signals to create an immersive meditation space that can be seen, felt, and touched. Rooted in the theme of future work, this project offers a digital sanctuary for individuals navigating high-pressure, hyper-connected environments. It guides users on a gradual path toward calmness through four core interactive experiences: Welcome Illumination Ultrasonic sensors detect when a user approaches, triggering soft lighting that slowly illuminates like a tree awakening—setting a peaceful, ritual-like tone. Colour Soundscape Meditation Users place coloured cards on a light sensor. Reflected light values trigger natural ambient sounds (wind, rain, fire, sand), with each representing emotional or elemental associations. This creates a personalised and multi-sensory meditation experience. Heart Rate Visualisation A Pulse Sensor detects the user’s heart rate and controls the rhythmic movement of petals or leaves. This makes internal rhythms visible, helping users regulate their breathing and become more self-aware. Calmness as Growth A pressure sensor at the base measures how long a user remains still. The longer the duration, the higher the tree trunk rises—physically symbolising inner calm and emotional growth. By turning body signals into physical responses, Meditation Tree visualises emotion and mindfulness, offering a moment of stillness and self-connection in the context of future work.
