Brainstorm Arena

by Team Alfie

A game that explores various dynamics of team collaboration. It is a metaphor for how Ideas, represented by the lights and balls, move around in a team discussion.

Team discussions can be hard. Everyone wants to voice their opinions, but not everyone's voices are equally heard. How do we make collaboration more visual and interactive, in a fun way that also fosters team dynamics?

Introducing: Brainstorm Arena. Our project is an interactive table that visualizes the dynamics of team collaboration through voice input and physical activity. Our table serves as a dynamic medium that encourages and fosters meaningful discussions during group gatherings.

The complexity of the game reflects the multifaceted nature of teamwork. Just like a team, the game unfolds in layers shaped by unique personalities, differing motivations, and unforeseen obstacles that emerge unexpectedly.

How it works

Interaction Modes: Voicing, Visualizing, Throwing, Stepping

Stage 1:

After picking a topic for discussion, participants speak into a microphone to express their ideas. Based on the volume of their voice, they receive a proportional number of LED lights. This design metaphor highlights how, in real group discussions, louder or more extroverted voices often dominate over quieter, more introverted ones.

Teammates throwing balls to express their opinions
Stage 2:

Participants throw balls at specific targets on the table, attempting to change the LED colors on the targets to the color that represents what they believe is a great idea. While throwing, they can simultaneously explain their thoughts to try and "persuade" others. Participants can also step on foot pedals under the table to control flippers for “defense.” A spinning arm in the middle represents the obstacles teams encounter during their group discussions. This interaction serves as a metaphor for how people in group settings discuss, defend, and negotiate their ideas with others, ultimately leading to a shared consensus through these layers of engagement.
